Comments:

In July, 2011 I made it official and retired fully, turning our little billiard business over to Ms. Vickie and nephew Dan.
Back in 2008 when first joining this website I posted, "took up road bicycle riding .... hope to do some long distance touring in the years ahead". At the time didn't think bicycle touring would turn into a way of life but it has. So far my bicycle adventures have included a corner to corner crossing of America. Completed that journey on Oct. 4th, 6,343 miles, thru 16 states in 126 days.

In 2012 decided to ride the length of the Mississippi River from the headwaters at Lake Itasca, MN to the Gulf of Mexico. That journey took me 37 days and about 2,100 miles.

So far in 2013 I've toured solo through most of the Netherlands, nearly 1,100 Kilometers (approximately 680 miles). In August 2013 heading to Belize which will kick off a 3 year solo bicycle tour of 10 warm climate countries around the globe. My hope is that when I take my final breath I'll be able to say "I did that".

You can read about the above adventures and future adventures at my website www.oldguyonabicycle.com

It is my hope and desire to inform, entertain and inspire folks including you my classmates that maybe it is time to fullfill that dream you've always had but haven't done. Trust me if I can do it, you can do it. The time is now!

School Story:

I have always considered the Class of 1965 as my extended family. Most of you will never know the positive impact you had on my life. To all of you thank you for being a huge part of my life.

Sorry to learn another of our classmates has passed.  Greg and I had several adventures that were memorable for sure, he was quite the character and oh yes was a bit wild.  I remember vividly getting drunk with him one time, we were still in high school.  Another time he set me up with a double blind date, after a movie Greg drove us to cemetery where we did some frolicking with the gals. Crazy night!  A week after graduating from CLCHS Greg joined Sandy Rutherford and I for a week in the Bahamas.  Once again, having Greg with us turned out to be quite an adventure.  I didn't see Greg after that until 2011 while I was completing my cross country bicycle adventure.  Greg invited me to spend the night at his home and proved to be a most gracious host.  I was most impressed with Greg's total committment to raising his grandaughter.  He wasn't the wild and crazy Greg I knew from hs, he was a loving man.  Greg was an inspiration and admirable man.  Rest in peace my friend.

My new profile pic is me after completing my annual 100 mile bicycle ride on my birthday. My cardiologist gave me strict orders to never do again, have to hold my rides to 60 miles or less. She says riding a 100 miles in generally near 100 degree temperatures and high humidity is NOT conducive to living a long life after a guy has had a heart attack. Dang! Old age is not for the weak or easy but beats the alternative.

Thank you God for giving me life a pretty good life it’s been. Sure there have been ups and downs, mistakes and regrets but you have seen me through all. You blessed me more than I deserved with many adventures and memories and best of all the greatest gift of all, my son Shawn. What I’m saying is if this is my last day I’m prepared. These are the words I said quietly to God as I lay on the operating table waiting for a catheter cardio procedure after having a heart attack on January 12th. During the procedure the heart surgeon found my LAD artery was 99% blocked, he rotorootered it out and placed a stent. Upon completion of the operation the surgeon and everyone in the operating room kept telling me how lucky I was as the LAD artery aka “The Widow Maker” is frequently not survivable. Many of them said my many aerobic miles bicycling had given me a strong heart which attributed to my survival. Sure my bicycling has given me a strong heart but it is God’s will that he has kept me alive.

For the past 5 years I’ve been procrastinating writing a series of stories about how I learned from the saddle of a bicycle there is a God and he has been guiding, providing and protecting me. I believe my blocked artery was a little kick in the butt from God reminding me to get busy and write. I got God’s message and have begun writing those stories and will post them on my website www.oldguyonabicycle.com. I’ll post a link here on FB as I post each story for you to read and share with you my friends.

Oh yea, I’m already back riding my bicycle though only short, slow easy distances. God willing I’ll be back to a 100% in a few months.

My new favorite song "Don't Worry be Happy" as it easily adapts to me. I got no home, got no bed to call my own. I don't worry, I be happy!

Though Linda may no longer be with us in the flesh, she will always be in the heart of the many of us she touched, her perpetual smiles and giggles, kindness, and friendship would always bring a smile of happiness to others.  A more positive person have I rarely met.  Throughout the years we stayed in touch, she always had a kind word of support for my adventures, uplifting my spirit.  No matter what life dealt her, Linda stayed optimistic, she was like the rainbow after a storm.  Now, God has called her to be one of his angels.
