God called Vera to come Home in 2002. She was 55 years old. She suffered with cancer and even though she went into remission, it returned with a vengence. Vera was my buddy in high school. As was my dear Carol Stone, Kathy Ebel and Vicki Toth. Many others, but in the latter years we four spent a lot of time together. Vera always had 'the car'. She could take us to The New Place. This was where she and I met best friends from Chicago and 'fell in love'. We would make weekend trips to Chicago on the train and stay with my grandmother. We went to proms in Chicago and brought our out of town boyfriends to our senior prom. Vera was my roommate at Kendall College. She couldn't stay long due to finances and went into the working world and met her first husband. When I started flying for Eastern I would go and stay with her on my layovers. She was very talented. She drew wonderful still sketches and painted also. After divorcing and leaving the Chicago area she settled in Wisconsin. She opened her own frame shop and displayed her artwork at festivals and fairs. She owned horses and showed them. Also chickens, goats and a rooster. She and Dan had two wonderful daughters, Sara and Anne. Sara and my oldest daughter began a pen pal relationship at age 12 and throughout the years visited with each other. They went to Ireland together for Christmas 4 years ago with their spouses. Knowing how sick her mother was, Sara vowed to take Vera to Paris...and she did. I have a shoebox of letters from Vera that I have saved over the years and when I have a strong day...I read them. She always made me laugh. Carol Stone knew Vera from early childhood on. They have many more years of memories than I do. Vera and Carol put many hours of work into painting scenes for our high school plays and were 'favorites' of our dear Mr. Penland. Carol and I attended Vera's memorial service in Wisconsin that was put together by her daughters. Her husband Daniel still resides in their beautiful home and the rooms of her artwork must comfort him to a small degree. You are missed Vera Jayne...I still hear your laughter...
